Meet Br. David

The Midwest District interviewed Br. David Galinski, a senior Brother serving as a guidance counselor at St. Patrick High School (Chicago, Illinois). Br. David reflected on his time as a student at St. Mel High School and the Brothers who have inspired his own journey.

What inspired you to be a Brother?

Seeing the Brothers at St. Mel when I was a student ... they were happy, great teachers, and they enjoyed what they were doing ... great role models!

Tell us about a Brother mentor in your life.

Brother Emory Hogan was my novice master and a man I really loved. He showed me what being a Brother was all about. He lived what he preached and I've tried to follow his example throughout my life as a Brother!

Tell us about some of the Brothers who inspired you.

My 1st year teaching we had an older Brother, Vincent, in our community in Kansas City who was a real inspiration for the young Brothers. We would go to his room after supper, and he would give us pointers on teaching, etc. The best classroom help in the world. We really loved him!

Share a story about your time as a Brother, so far.

My first year teaching in Kansas City, we had a fire drill on a very hot and humid day. On the way back in to school, I got caught (by the kids) wearing Bermuda shorts under my robe. It spread around quickly and my Principal was NOT happy to hear about It. I laughed even then, but he didn't!

What is one wish you have for the next generation?

Whatever you choose to do with your life, do it with a great passion and you will be a happy camper!

What is one gift you would present to your students?

HOPE!

How has support for Senior Brothers positively impacted the Brothers in your community?

As I get closer to retirement, I see how impactful the Kabara Challenge has been for our retired Brothers. They can live comfortable, dignified lives and still get back as much as they can to our mission. We are blessed to have the Kabara Challenge.
